Celebrating Reno's Infinite Potential For Absurdity

We're being asked, we being those of us who talk most about this event, "Can I still get a room for NadaDada Motel?" It's true, the rooms at the El Cortez are full, and full means full.

Give up your dreams, we say, of squeaking in under the door mats of this once grandiose and prestigious inn in the heart of Reno's heated hub; we did not all get a room there. We're branching out; the inn is full. Let's go bigger.

If one interprets anarchy to mean mutual-self-interest, this is what we have here–anarchy. You are being asked to become an art event promoter/organizer yo damn self! Make it happen. If you'd prefer, call yourself a (dis)organizer, it works for us!

This is not passing the buck, this is mutual-self-interest at work. This is not Mad Max, this is not warring factions vying for attention (well maybe there's some of that). This is NOT the trickle-down way of doing things. This is a less-and-less governed event featuring creative individuals who are taking the reins themselves in their own ways.

Artists: each year we're making a stronger stand and the old cliché of the starving artist, out of necessity, has become more and more a thing of the past. We're standing on our own, by ourselves but beside each other. We're not being nurtured any more. We've grown out of it and we're not standing for it any more.

The money's not there anymore; the staffing is not there anymore. The granting is not there, and the interest in becoming a non-profit organization WAS NEVER THERE! This is artists promoting themselves. Period.

You can do this. Unhampered, you will make your creative dream come true better than anyone else could have imagined it for you, so go; call them now, ask the management whatever you'd like. Their names are Floyd and Karol. People like to hear their own names so use them:

Townhouse Motorlodge 775-323-1821, also at 2nd & Arlington.

We want to flood these places with interest from artists, so you just go ahead and push the limits. You're invited, it's your event!

If this place is not adequate for your needs, go down Arlington Av. Inquire at any motel you'd like, that's how this event was started in the first place and as it builds each year, Joe, who owns ALL the motels between 2nd and 4th on Arlington has become a lover of what we're doing. Let's show him how much interest there is this year. The event in 2010 will be June 10th thru the 13th. Or, since it's so early at this point, I'm writing this in early October, 2009, ask questions here on this blog network. Pretty much anywhere around this site. Somebody will respond to you.
We've got a crowd drawn here on this site.

o'k,i called the townhouse to reserve my room. the managers had heard something about the event but really the lady was totally not sure of what we are about. when i told her about displaying art in the rooms she commented back "well i could see you setting up some art in the yard but not in the rooms" and then said to her husband "here you talk to her". i explained the event to him and also told him to expect more artists to be calling to reserve rooms. the manager asked me how much the el cortez was charging, i said i didn't know for sure but it was reasonable.

Hi Cindy.. boy this is kinda strange when you stop and think about it. In the past motels have seemed to be places where shadowy assignations take place, where you close the blinds so no one can see in. So Nada Dada reverses this construct in asking folks to come right in. If someone rents a room, they should be able to do whatever they want in there, right?

Hello NadaDadadans,

As we move closer to this fabulous happening, let me assure you, this town is full of venues! If you can't get in at the El Cortez or the Townhouse... PLEASE be a good anarchist artist and take it upon yourselves to find ANOTHER cool venue to add to this reproductive fest of Nada freaks. Yes, you are being asked to be another 'leader' of this fine happening.

Remember... there is also the '360 Stage' available now too! Perfect venue space right on the river! Talk to our Noble Instigator Jefe for more info.

My 'Same-Sex NadaDada Wedding' to the lovely Jill Marlene will take place on the 360 Stage this year (keep a close eye open for the very special wedding cake surprise) and don't miss the reception! The public is invited to the wedding, so please come, bring picket signs for same-sex marriages in Nevada! Just WAIT until you see the bridal party! Don't be scared. Invitations to be distributed to the public soon.

We will also open up the "Bridal Suite" in the El Cortez for some collaborative action installations in adjoining rooms 201 and 202. "Sanquine Homage" by myself, and a couple of special guest artists will take place, along with; 'I don't know what my room is called yet' by Trelaine Lewis. Our rooms will be attached at the the joints held together by a big bloodly meathook and some purple beads, so come on by!

Again... make it happen, do-it-yourself, get it out there and make some noise! NadaDada Motel is on it's way! Now I must go melt some candles on my wedding gown.

Remember!

Everyone - we will be working on a directory too of all of the artists and their locations - The artist, where & when. So, it will be easier to find out where everyone is located plus all special events and times will be included. But all artist will need to email either me, Diane or Chad their info. So, if you do have an unusual location - you won't be missed. This year will be more open because of the new 360 Stage. So, please, please let us know where you will be.

Thanks,
Margie

A testimonial from Elaine Parks:

Things are about to change for me, but for the last 9 years, I've been working out in the solitude of the high-desert, which I love, but the thing you don't get is very much real communication about your art work with someone who's interested. The thing I love about our Motel Show is just that. Many people who care and who have above average intelligence come by and talk to you about what you've been doing in the studio, which in my case is a fairly isolated process.

The other great thing is the community that grows up around this kind of event. All these artists are working independently and together to make this greater thing, that gets some serious attention. The mood of general revelry and helpfulness might be something peculiar to Reno. I'm proud and happy to be a part of it. I "live" in Tuscarora and I'm about to live in LA again. But really for the last few years I feel like I live all over Nevada, and Reno has become one of those homes, stimulated mostly by NadaDada doings.

Thanks Chad for that testimonial from E! Sweet, sure and real. Thanks to you to E for being here with us for this disorganized arta-messola!

Last night everyone... I felt as though an angel had dropped right in to our laps. Obviously not literally, but she did come to us bearing a tremendous interest in our happening, a helluva a great mind, energy and ideas poured from her. Last night AND this am. This morning Chad, Rachelle and myself met up with Bob at the Cortez to get some pages all lined up and hook up a plan. Things are looking incredibly great for this year. I mean, I am floating in some weird shock bliss and it is so effin cool!

Laid-eaze and gentler men... please puff your stogies, primp your crickets, bloody your sighs and hang your art hats in this year's NadaDada Motel event, as we have some very good news and surprises awaiting your participation.

Must go dream now some more.

I'm feeling a bit sentimental, I suppose, because these past couple of days have enlightened me of our destiny as NadaDadans here in Reno. And right now all I can say is no way? Is this really going down for us, or is it my intuition and hopeful tenacity once again playing tricks on me. Somebody pinch me, please?

I am getting many inquires from my friends on Facebook asking about Nada Dada Motel.... The more advertising we put out on the subject on our page the more questions they have. I have people asking me about the show all the way from Germany and the UK. I know lots of us have Facebook and Twitter. Lets use that source with updates.

This site will serve what purpose?

Let's talk about this concept of art in motel rooms and how this art event is different–and how to keep making it STAND OUT. What're we doing in these motel rooms, hmmm?? How much interest has there been? What's it like to attend this thing? Can other cities get involved? Who pays what to whom? When is check out time? If we find porn under the bed do we keep it?

People have a lot of questions to ask so ask away–or answer away–hell, do both.

Serendipity Gets It Upity

serendipity gets it uppity for me because it can feel great to be out of control, not calling the shots, that can feel great. I like art in that way and art making, you know, when a drip just works. Usually it turns out the 'accident' was better than you possibly could have planned out. Well, that's kinda how this show should be seen. 50 artists have exhibitions in rooms next to each other, there's gonna be some juxtaposed serendipity gettin' it uppity in hee-ah.
